The old serial numbers are quite complete for the years 1883 to 1906 (serial numbers 4096 to 355,000), for the following models: 1881; 1889. Marlin 1895,.45-70 Government, Serial Number 23110273 Barrel length – 22 inch Magazine – 4-round capacity Sights – Dovetail front, no rear (I can install one if you wish) Stocks – Factory, smooth walnut stock (curved butt plate) and fore end, no recoil pad Condition – Excellent w/minor handling marks on the furniture and receiver.
I have a Model 1895 lever action, serial number B007XXX. I'm trying to determine when It was made. The barrel is marked as a 'Model 1895' (no 'S'). The rifle has a straight stock, not a pistol grip, and is not checkered. I bought it used in 1983.
I've read on other posts in here that the 'B' either indicates the year of manufacture, or that it has Ballard rifling. Anouther post stated that subtracting the first two digits fo the serial number from 100 gave the year of manufacture, but that makes no sense with this number.
